  • Professional Shiatsu Training

We are proud to provide a Professional Traditional Shiatsu curriculum. Our focus is on training students to be proficient in a variety of Shiatsu styles. Shiatsu is a fully recognized system of health care in Japan, where its practitioners undergo extensive training and licensing.  Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure” and refers to a body therapy style which utilizes finger pressure as well as other techniques to help balance the flow of Ki (Qi) throughout the body. The basic tenant of Eastern Medicine is that where there is blockage in the body, there is a disruption of Ki (vital processes) allowing dysfunction and disease ensues.  By balancing the Ki , Shiatsu Practitioners are able to correct the flow of Ki which allows a client’s body to return to its normal self-regulating homeostatic state.

  • Foundation Level Training will cover mat techniques as represented by Shizuto Masunaga’s Zen Shiatsu and Suzuki Yamamoto’s Barefoot Shiatsu as well as the stretching and energy work of Macrobiotic Shiatsu and its influences (George Ohsawa (Macrobiotics), Morihei Ueshiba (Aikido), and Masahiro Oki (Yoga). Coursework will include an introduction to the Eastern approach to body systems through Traditional Chinese Medical Theory (TCM).  Students will understand the concepts of Yin & Yang Theory, Five Element Theory and learn pathways and major point location of the 12 basic and 2 additional meridians. A basic whole-body routine, including abdominal Ampuku, utilizing stretching, body mobilizations, point pressing and manipulation as well as breath and energy work will be developed.

  • Mid-Level Training will consist of  learning the pressure point and meridian therapy styles of Tokujiro Namikoshi  and an exploration of  Five Element Shiatsu.  Table techniques will be introduced and essential touch and biomechanics will be taught. Coursework will continue with Five-Element Concepts and extend them to diagnostic indicators and procedures for balancing the body.  Students will also learn about the 8 Extraordinary Meridians and their regulatory function.  Specific Point effects will be examined and experiences through clinic and home practice.  Traditional remedy routines for addressing specific client concerns will be developed.  Several other therapy specific bodyworking styles such as Tui Na and Trigger Point Therapy will be introduced as complimentary practices.

  • Third Level Training gives the practitioner an advanced perspective on Shiatsu and a chance to integrate both Eastern and Western  modalities to provide a flexible client experience.  The student will learn how to evaluate a client’s energy level and balance and will practice advanced self-care techniques for developing their own strength and inner energy.  Additional techniques borrowed from Jin Shin Jyutsu, Nuad Boran (Thai) and Amma will be utilized as well as energy techniques.  Healthy nutrition from the Five Element and Macrobiotic perspectives will be introduced. Training will be primarily hands-on at this level and students will be expected to complete a certain number of shiatsu sessions per week.

  • Examinations will certify the student to be an entry-level Shiatsu Practitioner
(Note: this coursework does not provide the scope necessary to give students the credentials for a Massage Therapist license in the State of Maine and they are not allowed to use that title in their practice.  Additional training is required)
